Fire Reporting for University Officials

Any fires not known to be accidental that occur on university owned or controlled property must be reported

Fire Reporting Requirements for University Officials

Per the Clery Act, the University of Arizona is required to disclose all arson that occurs on or within the university’s Clery geography. This includes seemingly minor fires such as burning wastebaskets or bulletin boards, regardless of whether they are discovered while burning or after being extinguished. To properly evaluate for arson, all evidence for any fire not known to be accidental (such as a cooking fire) must be considered by the institutional official designated to make such determinations.

Any university official on any University of Arizona campus who receives a report of a non-accidental fire must report it. If the origin of the fire is unknown, please make a report so that it can be investigated.

Reporting Active Fires

Any fire that is actively burning should be immediately reported to the University of Arizona Police Department (if on Main Campus) or local law enforcement by calling 9-1-1.

Reports made to UAPD will be shared with Risk Management. If fire occurs on any other University of Arizona campus, including the College of Applied Science & Technology (Sierra Vista), College of Veterinary Medicine (Oro Valley), and the Phoenix Bioscience Core campus, please also alert Risk Management after emergency services have been called by emailing rms-contact@arizona.edu

Reporting Extinguished Fires

For extinguished fires where emergency services are not required, a report must be made directly to Risk Management by emailing rms-contact@arizona.edu

Arson

Arson: any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with or without intent to defraud, a dwelling house, public building, motor vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another, etc.

Any investigated fire that meets this definition is considered arson, regardless of the value of any property damage. This includes incidents where an individual willfully or maliciously burns his or her own property.
